CASE STUDY: JOHNSTONE CONSTRUCTION

Find out how Johnstone Construction transformed their business with Acuite
CHALLENGE – SOFTWARE AND DATA IN SILOES AND OUT OF DATE
Johnstone Construction prides itself on being ahead of the curve – especially when it comes to technology adoption. However, in 2014 their software operated in siloes so data insights weren’t shared across the business.
Their first response was to build their own central analytics system to process and access the information.
“We’re a construction company, not a software company. Spending time and money to develop something in-house was distracting us from what we do best – delivering quality projects to our clients.”
SOLUTION – ACUITE’S DASHBOARDS & INTEGRATIONS
Looking around the team found Acuite Construction Intelligence. Acuite had just closed a million-dollar funding round and were barely out of beta-testing. But when Hugh saw the product in action on a demo, he knew he had to have it.
“Acuite had everything we needed from fantastic operational tools for HSE and defecting through to integrations with all our key software to pull data to a central analytics and risk dashboard.”
ACUITE IS EASIER TO USE & WAS CHEAPER THAN BUILDING IN-HOUSE
ACUITE INTEGRATES WITH OUR CORE SOFTWARE:
“Acuite has become what I would called critical infrastructure and we have shaped the way we operate, around their system. Without Acuite we would not have the tools to manage our day to day business or the instant reporting and predictive analytics that demonstrate where we are now and where we are likely to be.”

HOW IT WORKS
Data is pulled together in Acuite and is then available to view on dashboards accessible across the business. This means the data is real, it hasn’t been altered by several pairs of hands to suit individuals own requirements and is relevant because it is in real time.
REAL TIME DATA = REAL TIME INSIGHTS
Central and accessible information means that Hugh and the team can pick up issues earlier. A recent $14 million project had issues with the quality of consented floorings. Hugh saw this could cause massive work delays because the response time for requests for information (RFI’s) for that contractor was extending to over 120 days and needed to be addressed ASAP.
“I used that information to correlate response times on queries with time delays on site. Before we could do fancy spread sheets and know something wasn’t right, but it was difficult and time consuming to drill down. Now, because of the integrations and analytics it is all displayed on the dashboard right in front of us.”
ACUITE SAVES TIME, MONEY & MOST IMPORTANTLY, STRESS!
“Building our own software meant there were always bugs and the costs kept spiralling for fixing them and simply maintaining what was a very basic system. With Acuite we know exactly what our costs are each month and we don’t have to worry about keeping the system going or trying to improve it – that is all taken care of.”
According to Hugh the best part of all is that it is easy to use, and help is always an IM or phone call away;
MADE FOR THE INDUSTRY, BY THE INDUSTRY
“People underestimate the complexities of building software in-house,” he says. “It is not just the hours spent to build but getting it to integrate with other software and then having a front end that is user friendly across technological skill levels. Often someone spends a lot of time creating something and then they are the only person who really knows how to use it or can fix it when things go wrong – that is a lot of risk and cost bound up in one person.”
Acuite Co-founder David Speight understands the demands of the commercial construction industry, having come from it himself;
Founded in 1987, Johnstone Construction, specialises in complex commercial and light industrial builds. The company prides itself on delivering big company projects with a small company’s focus on customer service and attention to detail.
The company was launched in 2014 to provide a construction specific business intelligence reporting platform that plugs into existing systems to give real time dashboard views into project and portfolio health. It also provides insights into trends and analytics across critical reporting KPI’s of Time, Cost, Quality, Health and Safety and Relationships. This information is available not only on an individual level, but across the whole project, within regions and across different regions. Acuite is currently expanding into Australia.
